What’s Taking Jesus So Long?

“The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” 2 Peter 3:9

If Jesus is really supposed to come back to earth, and indescribably horrific Tribulation is to come to the world, and the world will come to an end, and every human being will be judged either at the Judgment Seat of Christ or the Great White Throne judgment, and His followers are to spend eternity in heaven with God while unbelievers will head off to hell forever, and all of this is in fact true, what the heck is taking Jesus so long? Enough already, right? Isn’t the world in enough trouble as it is? Why won’t Jesus just hurry back and whisk away believers to safety, get the Tribulation done, end the world, create a new heaven and earth, and send everyone to heaven or hell? Why is He taking so long?

Oh, if we could only comprehend the heart of God, the heights and depths of love He has for His Creation, His patience and the magnificence of His mercy, the phenomenal breadth of His longing for humanity to come to be with Him forever. But we can’t fathom this kind of love, can we, not in how short we fall when it comes to the way we humans love.

Why won’t Jesus hurry? Why won’t God hurry up and end the world? Because God loves us so infinitely much that not only did He send His only begotten Son Jesus to the cross to die for our sins so we could repent and turn to Him, be forgiven, and spend forever with Him, but no matter how heinously we have sinned, no matter how much we have lived our lives in despicable rebellion, He is patiently giving us more time for more people to repent and give their lives to Him forever. His long-suffering for us is amazing, isn’t it?

Is your life fully surrendered to the Lord? If not, yield your life to Him utterly while there is yet time. He could return this very day. He could return this very hour.

“The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” 2 Peter 3:9
