Genuine love for the Lord Jesus Christ should naturally result in OBEDIENCE to the Lord Jesus Christ which should naturally include SERVICE to the Lord Jesus Christ, and all of this is to be the natural result of the Lord’s love for us and our turning from our sins, believing in Him as Lord and in His death and resurrection, and turning to God and His ways. This is known as being born again. It is also called being saved. It is also referred to as receiving Christ as Lord. We receive His love, mercy, grace, forgiveness, and the promise of everlasting life. He loves us, we love Him in response, and we obey Him and serve Him in our love for Him. This is all the natural course of God’s love flowing into us, from us to Him, and through us to others. But there is something we need to be careful of, friend, and it is this.
We must make sure our service to the Lord and others in His name, also known as ministry, never becomes a higher priority than our love for the Lord. We can become so excited and diligent and committed to serving the Lord and others that we go full steam ahead in ministry and push loving, worshiping, honoring, praising, communing with, fellowshipping with, singing to, seeking, listening to, learning of, learning from, studying the Bible, enjoying the company of, engaging in relationship with the Lord on the back burner. We can even go further and forget about it altogether as we stampede forward serving Him. Believe it or not, we can even go so far as to forget about or virtually forget about the Lord Himself in our exceeding fervor to serve Him and others. All of a sudden, we are so consumed with serving, serving, serving that we are blinded to the reality that we have forgotten God or just about forgotten Him anyway. Or, at the very least, are neglecting the very Lord we so long to serve!
I have made this grave error at times and had to be corrected. Given my exceeding love, passion, and zeal for the Lord and for telling the world about Him, and given my natural predisposition to work and push myself extremely hard, I can fall in this area if I am not careful. Can you relate?
Friend, let us ALWAYS be diligent in making the Lord and our love for Him and our time alone with Him and even when we are not alone with Him but going through our days remembering, acknowledging, seeking, and following Him OUR HIGHEST PRIORITY.
Jesus first! Not ministry!
Loving the Lord first. Then serving Him as His Spirit who lives inside His followers so leads us. Let us not forget this. And should we find we have fallen, let us quickly repent and return to adoring, magnifying, and exalting our first love – Jesus the Christ, Lord of Lords, King of Kings, God almighty, forever Christ, AMEN!
Father, may you be our first love now and always! For anyone reading this who has his or her priorities out of order, please bring correction by your Holy Spirit. Not just now. But anytime we ever fall into this, into having our priorities out of order, please swiftly chasten us. Dear Lord, may we love you with all our hearts forevermore! And for anyone reading this who is falling short in loving and obeying you, once again, dear Lord, please bring conviction and correction. You are God forever! Thank you Lord, AMEN!
“But take careful heed to do the commandment and the law which Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, to love the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways, to keep His commandments, to hold fast to Him, and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul.”” Joshua 22:5
“We love Him because He first loved us.” 1 John 4:19
