I loved how BOLDLY the two women who spoke to me about my t-shirt told me how blessed they were to see someone being SO BOLD about faith in Jesus Christ. Talk about BOLD! The first lady was gushing at the mouth about her family’s salvation, and the second lady was the lady at the cashier checking out my items. She said with the state of the world we’re living in, we absolutely, definitively need JESUS. Bold, right?
But here’s my question. Given the dire straits of the world right now, and given that Jesus Christ is the only way to eternal life in heaven and the only shot at the abundant life on earth promised us by God, why should it be considered SO BOLD to walk around my everyday life wearing a t-shirt that says I FOLLOW JESUS?! In all truth, this shouldn’t be a BOLD statement. It should be an everyday, run-of-the-mill, garden-variety, all-the-time, most natural statement in the world. Right? But alas, it is not.
Do you know it was only hours before my Wal-Mart shopping that I had looked at the boxes of brand new t-shirts in my living room wondering if I had truly done God’s will when I ordered the ministry’s three lines of VERY BOLD t-shirts. What in heaven’s name would I do with all the t-shirts? I wondered. Virtually nobody has ordered any by making a donation of $20 or more for the t-shirts. And just as I was about to yet again try to come up with some way to start distributing them, God told me to WAIT.
Little did I know He would confirm only hours later at Wal-Mart that there really was a reason I ordered all those shirts. And that He really does have a plan. And, come to think of it, shortly before my Wal-Mart visit, my ex-husband who used to go nuts over all my talk about Jesus asked me if he could please get a “I FOLLOW JESUS” shirt in navy blue. Now imagine that.
I had to special order a VERY BOLD Jesus shirt for the man who divorced me when the Lord prompted me to ask him to choose between the Lord, me, and the marriage – and the choices he was making at the time. The Lord then convicted me to desire above all else that after the divorce my ex-husband would not look back and see me and the marriage – but that he would see Christ. And, despite how far short I fall daily of God’s glory, my ex-husband has by God’s grace alone managed to see just that.
And, so it is, that I am reminded by my BOLD, grape purple “I FOLLOW JESUS” t-shirt experience today that I seek for my life to be as bold as ever. For, as the world comes crashing down around me, as I fall madly head over heels in love with Jesus more by the day, I want the world to know that it may be considered a BOLD life to be so committed and dedicated to following Jesus – but it is well worth it. Not only do I get to know I will spend eternity in heaven with the Lord, but I have the most amazingly, breathtakingly beautiful life on earth getting to walk day by day in my faith journey with Jesus.
So why can’t I just quietly go about my business like so many others it seems? Why can’t I just wear a blank t-shirt and say a quick hello in passing to everyone I meet? Honestly? Because I love Jesus Christ far too much, and am far too concerned with the world’s need to come to know Him, to believe in Him, and to follow Him – to keep this love of mine to myself. Besides, the Bible is all too clear that I – and you – have a responsibility.
We are not called to be ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We are called to go out into the world – yes, even Wal-Mart – to preach the Gospel and disciple the world around us with the Truth about Jesus Christ.
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” Romans 1:16 KJV
“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” Matthew 28:19-20 KJV
“And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word, By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus. And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.” Acts 4:29-31 KJV
