“Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails…” 1 Cor. 13:4-8
Some versions of the Bible use the word “patient” instead of “suffers long”, and isn’t it true that patience involves the flesh suffering when it must wait and endure whatever it goes through rather than receiving what it wants when it wants it? One day the Lord lovingly showed me how patience, or suffering long, is the first descriptive word concerning love in these well known scriptures. I believe He wanted to show me that all that love entails requires patience. That it will take patience, and endurance, to learn to walk in Christ’s love. To live according to the love of God. To show forth the fruit of God’s love in our hearts and lives. What a phenomenal blessing that love, patience, and all the beautiful fruit borne of love we do not need to come up with on our own. All of it begins with the Lord Jesus Christ and the love He pours into us via His glorious Spirit who lives inside His followers. The Spirit of Christ will bear in and through us all we need to live our lives in a manner pleasing, honoring, and glorifying to Him!
