Man with the Banana

“Bless the Lord, O my soul;
And all that is within me, bless His holy name!
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
And forget not all His benefits:
Who forgives all your iniquities,
Who heals all your diseases,
Who redeems your life from destruction,
Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies,
Who satisfies your mouth with good things,
So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” Psalm 103:1-5

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life;
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord
Forever.” Psalm 23:6

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” 1 Thess. 5:16-18

I had stopped in the park with the wheelchair dogs to give them some water when I looked off to the side and noticed a man holding a banana he was eating. Might sound strange, but that banana really stood out to me. He held it up in his hand, its peel hanging halfway down, waiting for the next time he felt like taking a bite. Made me think of bananas, of how I had some, of how I love them, of how I might eat one again soon. That’s when this message came to me.

People all around the world are starving – some literally to death. Others are so sick they can’t or don’t want to eat. Others are so disabled they can’t even hold a banana in their hands if they try. Here I am, loved and forgiven by God, promised an everlasting relationship with Him through repentance and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, whole, healthy, able and desirous to eat, a woman God delivered from anorexia, with food in my little kitchen, and able to pick and choose what I’d like to eat and when I’d like to eat it. Right down to my next yummy delicious banana. Do you know there’s a tragedy in all this?

I can easily pridefully, neglectfully, carelessly, foolishly, wrongfully, sinfully get so caught up in self and my everyday life that I take any and all of this for granted. Instead of being immeasurably thankful to the Lord first and foremost for Him and for my forever relationship with Him through Christ. And for His amazing, awesome provision. And not only feeling thankful, but expressing to Him and sharing with others my thanksgiving for Him and to Him.

I doubt very much this message is for me alone. Is it also for you? Sad to say, sometimes we need a reminder to express to the Lord our thanksgiving for everything from as big as His love, mercy, grace, forgiveness, and salvation through Jesus to something as small as a banana and the desire and ability to eat it.

May we never be forgetful to be thankful to the Lord for our countless blessings, most especially for Him. And should we dare to do so, may His Spirit remind us as He did that day through the man with the banana to PRAISE THE LORD for everything from His forever glory to His indescribable goodness. Hallelujah!
