“Rest, my weary one,” the Holy Spirit spoke gently to my heart. I had been working exceedingly hard in my ministry work which is typical for me, and being on the road for Jesus full-time and caring for my 4 handicapped ministry dogs adds to the exhaustion. He knew what I needed. Time away from my work which I so love given my unbelievable love and passion for Him and my enormous zeal for helping people find and follow Him. People had been warning me I needed rest as they had seen me burn out in the past. I needed time away with the Lord. To rest in Him, to enjoy His fellowship, to worship Him, to enjoy His love for me and mine for Him, to seek and hear from Him.
I was reminded of a woman I know who had jokingly and dramatically exclaimed one day as she was doing her work, “There is no rest for the weary!” I knew she was quoting a well-known saying, but I thought about it afterward. The saying is wrong! There IS rest for the weary! The best rest in the world!
No matter our labors, no matter our weariness, no matter our work, our challenges, trials, and tribulations, no matter all the blessings the Lord bestows upon us which can tire us out also, absolutely no matter what, there is a rest. There is a place for the weary to go to unwind, to relax, to recharge, to get refreshed, to be renewed. This place is Christ Himself. Abiding in Him. Dwelling in Him. Being in His presence. Alone with Jesus. Spending time away from it all WITH THE LORD JESUS CHRIST.
Friend, do you need rest from the cares of this world? Come to the Lord, friend. Sit at His feet. Or go take a walk with Him. Or a drive with Him. Or lay down on your face in prayer to Him. Or sit at the piano and play music and sing to Him. Or rest in your bed or on your cot in a prison cell and meditate on Him and His Word. Open the Bible, read, and take delight in the amazing treasures of His Word. Whatever it is He calls you to do each and every day away from the cares of this world and alone with Himself, take the love, care, and time alone with the Lord.
Thank you, Lord, for your love, and for your rest. Help us, Father, to take the time daily to rest in you. Refresh us, renew us, revive us, restore us, draw us to yourself. For those of us who believe in and follow you as Lord, Jesus, fill us afresh with your Holy Spirit. Lead us to come away and spend time with you. Thank you for your rest, dear Father! Amen! Amen! Amen!
“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”” Matthew 11:28-30
