I Saw Satan Licking His Chops

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.” 1 Peter 5:8-9

“Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” James 4:7-8

I was standing on a street corner one day talking to a young homeless woman who had very recently asked God to forgive her her sins and committed her life to Christ as Lord. I told her I was very concerned that Satan was going to use a certain man she knew to lure her away from Jesus as I had crossed paths with him before and discerned evil. I knew she was especially vulnerable because she had barely begun reading the Bible, was not assembling with Christ’s followers, and had nobody but myself who didn’t see her very often to help her develop her new relationship with Christ.

It was as though I could see Satan licking his chops. Preparing to try to lure her away from the Lord. Within days, the woman disappeared. Not long afterward, I learned Satan in fact had used the man to draw her away.

There are three lessons in this for all of us, I believe.

1. Satan will go to any lengths to try to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10).
2. The Lord warns us in His Word about Satan, He warns us by His Holy Spirit by speaking warnings to our hearts, and He warns us through our fellow Christ followers to help ensure we don’t fall for the devil’s despicably sickening ploys.
3. We need to be absolutely vigilant in heeding God’s warnings, in not falling prey to Satan’s temptations and attacks, and in being solidly planted in our relationship with God, in His Word, and in His Body to resist Satan and live victoriously in, through, and for Christ.

Satan loves to lick his chops as he prowls around seeking prey, but Christ’s followers can have victory when we hear God’s warnings and faithfully yield ourselves to and follow the Lord.

Is the Lord warning you about something? Pay attention! Heed His voice! Follow the Lord! Your victory is in Jesus!
