“Now the Lord had said to Abram:
“Get out of your country,
From your family
And from your father’s house,
To a land that I will show you.
I will make you a great nation;
I will bless you
And make your name great;
And you shall be a blessing.
I will bless those who bless you,
And I will curse him who curses you;
And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
So Abram departed as the Lord had spoken to him…” Gen. 12:1-4
“Simply obey me,” the Spirit of God said to me one morning. That’s not all He said, but that was the gist of it. Along with that, He told me I would understand why He was telling me to do something that seemed totally crazy, in my eyes anyway, and in the eyes of others, down the road. When I arrived where He was leading me. Sending me. When I did what He told me to do. When I obeyed Him. When I did as He said. Simply obeyed Him.
Obedience does not require understanding and should not be contingent on understanding. Whether or not the Lord ever gives us understanding of why His Spirit calls us to do something, or to go somewhere, or to interact with someone, or whatever it is His Spirit leads us to do, should have nothing to do with how we respond when the Lord makes known His will to us, gives us an assignment, gives us a command, etc.
Our obedience should be contingent on only this. The Lord. And that He is Lord, that He is God, that He is sovereign, that He is master. And that we who follow Him, that we who are given a forever relationship with Him through repenting and committing our lives to Him, believing He is Lord and died on the cross and was raised from the dead to pay our sin penalty for us, are to look to the Lord as exactly who He is. Lord.
When the Lord by His Spirit and through His Word makes clear His will for us, no matter what it is, we should do exactly as He told me that day.
Simply obey Him. No matter how we feel, no matter what we’re thinking, no matter what His will looks like, feels like, seems like, requires of us, demands of us, may look like and appear to others, no matter what.
We need to do as He said.
“Simply obey me,” the Spirit of God said to me that day.
Is He speaking this to you right now?
In the verses above, the Lord told Abraham to do something seemingly utterly crazy. To pack up everything and head out into the unknown with nothing more than a promise that probably seemed unfathomable and unattainable. Abraham didn’t question, debate, resist, rebel, or argue.
He simply obeyed.
