Tale of Two Billboards

“Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?” Romans 6:16

Sunday morning. Driving home from church. A good distance away not because there aren’t plenty of churches close by. Because God sent me there to be among the homeless and others in need. Not to be served. To serve. Walking with the Lord isn’t about comfort, ease, and what’s close by. It’s about going the distance in love and obedience to God. I don’t sit still for long. So as I drive the 40 minutes or so, my eyes shift around the road as I go home to spend the Sabbath afternoon resting, still hard for me to rest as I thrive when active. That’s when I saw them. The billboards. And the message that was loud and clear – and bold with big emphatic lettering. What I saw wasn’t two random unrelated billboards. I saw a tale – of two billboards. Billboards reminding me of the dire straits this world is in and of what the Bible has to say about it all.

The first. “Real men love babies.” A bigger-than-life photo of a real man – and a baby. Then more lettering. Something about PRO-LIFE. Clearly delineating the joy of a man loving his baby who has been given life rather than killed at the merciless hearts and hands of those condoning the sin against God of abortion. Normally my rarely still mind starts drifting to the next subject. But not this time. My eyes, steady, saw the next billboard. “Sexy by Nature.” The sex toy store is near my home. How many times have I prayed the Lord would bring the owner to repentance and shut the store down? The tale of two billboards. First, the joy of living LIFE aright – in Christ by the Bible. The second. The love of money, perverting the purpose of sex and being Satan’s hands and feet to tempt this already DYING world into more sin against God. The message?

We cannot serve God and sin together (Rom. 6:16, Mt. 6:24). We are a servant of sin or righteousness. Of Satan, self, and this world – or of God. It’s one or the other. The consequences are clear. A relationship with the Lord now and forever in heaven. Or hell and the lake of fire forever separated from Him. These aren’t just billboards, you know. They represent the only two roads we as humans can drive down. One to heaven. The other to fiery hell.

Which road are you on? Whom do you serve? If you’re on the wrong road, and need directions, please don’t hesitate to contact me. The only road to heaven is Christ and true devotedness to God and His Word. Are you driving down the right road? Is it time to change direction? God through Christ rescued me from decades of debauchery leading to hell. By His grace I’m on the right road now. Are you?
