That Pretty Tree Bark

I was walking my beloved wheelchair ministry doggies Mr. Simeon and Miss Mercy through a parking lot on Hilton Head Island, SC, when I noticed the peculiar, varied colored, what-I-perceived-to-be beautiful bark of a little tree that happened to be right in the middle of the lot. Truth is I’ve spent so very much of my life not noticing much of the details of my surroundings and taking much of them for granted when I’ve bothered to notice.

I’m the kind of person when I used to read tons of books who wanted to get to the meat of the matter. I wasn’t interested in all the details of the setting. I would often skim through them. I wanted to know what would happen! I wanted action! And so it is I have overlooked so very much of God’s creation, but times have changed.

The more I fall in love with the Lord Jesus Christ, the more thankful I am for His countless blessings, and the more I notice and am thankful for all the intricate details of nature He has created. Right down to tree bark. Oh, how wonderful, how thoughtful, how creative, how carefully the Lord has designed everything in this world He has created.

Let us not so rush through our lives that we neglect to notice God’s creation and to express to Him our thanksgiving for it!

Father, how beautiful, how awesome, how amazing, how lovely is the work of your phenomenal heart and your almighty hands. Help us to take notice of all the beautiful blessings you bestow upon us in the way of the details of our everyday lives including nature and right down to a little bird’s song, a fruit tree and its juicy, delicious produce, and all the different colors of the bark of a tree. Thank you, dear Father. Forgive us for all that we neglect to thank you for. Help us to be thankful, dear Lord. And, oh, how we should be! Forever we should be thankful, dear Lord! AMEN!

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1

“Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth”; and it was so. And the earth brought forth grass, the herb that yields seed according to its kind, and the tree that yields fruit, whose seed is in itself according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.” Genesis 1:11-12
