The Day I Loved a Crow

The Day I Loved a Crow

I spent decades paying almost no regard to crows and their unique sound until the day I loved one. May sound strange. Please read on to understand. As much as I love New York City and have spent two amazing seasons of doing streets ministry there, it is filled with noise, pollution, chaos, tall buildings, constant crowds, chaos, a freezing winter climate, endless smells, constant cigarette and marijuana smoke which is problematic for me due to a smoke sensitivity, and extreme filth. Now that my second season of ministry there has ended, I have been more thankful to the Lord than I have ever been for the beauty of nature, for peace and quiet, for fresh air, and sunshine.

For so much of my life, I have taken God’s blessings for granted. Right down to the sound of a crow and the wonderful reminder it is of God’s great, beautiful, elaborate, and intricate outdoors. Sometimes it takes losing altogether or not having for a while something or someone we have taken for granted to recognize and acknowledge the blessings of the Lord as far as that something or someone is concerned. I am not sure I have ever appreciated nature so much as following my second season of streets ministry work in New York City, and I can’t say I have ever loved a crow the way I did that day I noticed its God-given sound. The Lord created that crow. He created nature. He created everything good on this earth. And He deserves love, praise, and thanksgiving for all the countless blessings He bestows upon us right down to the crow I loved.

Let us strive to not take for granted any of the Lord’s blessings – nature included. And let us be thankful. Thankful to the Lord who is the author of every single blessing. Oh, how blessed and beautiful and almighty is the Lord Jesus Christ!

Lord, thank you for your magnificence! For your Creation! For the animals! For nature! For all the variety on this earth from New York City to hearing a crow on a quiet island. Help us to take none of your goodness for granted. Help us see and hear and experience and be thankful for all the blessings you bestow upon us day by day. Help us not miss them. Thank you, dear Lord, AMEN!
