The Tale of Three Lovers…
Once upon a time there was a man with three lovers. He loved all three vehemently and passionately and relentlessly pursued all three to no end though it was abundantly clear he was getting himself into more and more trouble and headed for utter destruction. Each lover had a name that was the perfect fit for the lover. One was called SELF. One was called MONEY. And one was called PLEASURE.
Tragic to say this story isn’t a fairy tale. It’s a true story about how many people even those calling themselves Christians are living right now in this day and age. The Lord makes abundantly clear in the Bible that not only are countless people living for self, money, and pleasure, but that they love pleasure more than they love Him. If they love Him at all, that is.
If you are seeking the Lord in prayer to bring pleasure to yourself and realize reading this that you are a “lover of pleasure” more than a “lover of God”, don’t pray for Him to satisfy your sinful desires but pray in accordance with His will for your life with the ultimate desire that you live to love, serve, obey, praise, worship, bring pleasure to, and glorify the Lord God almighty! The ultimate way to know God’s will for your life is to read the Bible daily and to listen for the voice of the Holy Spirit who lives inside His followers and speaks to our hearts personally and individually always and only in line with the Bible.
Friend, we must die daily to self and no longer live to satisfy our lusts but to live fully surrendered to Christ.
The Christ life is not about self. It is about Christ. Let us remember this.
Father, this was a hard message to deliver. But in obedience to you I have. It was also a hard message to hear for me personally. Father, dear Father, please help us all to deny ourselves continually and to love you more than anything and anyone. Please teach us to pray in line with your will. Give us a mighty hunger to read your Word daily and to learn to live led by your Spirit according to your Word. Help us to enjoy the pleasures YOU want us to have on this earth and to let the ungodly wants go. Help us to live entirely for you, Lord. And please help those reading this to come to see if they don’t already know that there is more joy in living for you than in anything in the way of earthly treasures. I love you, Lord. Thank you for answering my heart’s cry, AMEN!
“But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!” 2 Tim. 3:1-5
“and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again.” 2 Cor. 5:15
“…Yet you do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.” James 4:2-3
