The TRAGEDY of the ECLIPSE

“The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork.” Psalm 19:1 NKJV

“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:” Romans 1:18-20 KJV

“Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen.” Revelation 1:7 NKJV

Americans tend to be extraordinarily busy people, but time seemed to stand still. People had followed the news. Stared at their watches. Had  their special glasses ready. They knew when to stop everything they were doing and rush outdoors. To look upward. Skyward. They had been talking about it. Planned their lives around it. So they would know just when to look to the heavens. To see the solar eclipse. Oh, what a tragedy!

Dictionary.com says “to eclipse” is “to make less outstanding or important by comparison; surpass:” and includes in its definition of  “eclipse” as “the obscuration of the light of the moon by the intervention of the earth between it and the sun (lunar eclipse).” As this world darkens, as countless people cleave to their sins and keep their backs turned to the Lord Jesus Christ’s everlasting light, as the world heads to an unfathomable darkening when God almighty will unleash His wrath on all this who do not repent and surrender their lives to Christ, we are eclipsing the majesty and glory of the Lord with the fleeting fleshly pleasures of this life. Imagine if we as a nation, and we as a world, stopped everything we were doing and repented and looked to the heavens to give praise, and worship, and glory to the Lord God almighty in heaven.

When the eclipse was done, how many rushed back to their busy lives with their backs still turned to the eternal light of the Lord Jesus Christ, or who claim to believe in Him and call themselves Christians yet don’t genuinely for Him but instead live for themselves and this world?

One day we will all look heavenward and face the unending love and mercy of the Lord for those who have lived for Him or the unimaginable wrath of God and face eternal torment in hell and the lake of fire. Let us look to the heavens and throw ourselves at the mercy of the Lord with repentant hearts and give our lives utterly to Him for the promise of everlasting life and forever fellowship in His magnificent ever light!
