The Thirsty Dog Testimony

The Thirsty Dog Testimony

“I stretch forth my hands unto thee: my soul thirsteth after thee, as a thirsty land.” Psalm 143:6

“As the deer pants for the water brooks, So pants my soul for You, O God.” Psalm 42:1

If you don’t believe you and I can’t be inspired by a thirsty dog, think again. Or, better yet, hear this little testimony. My beagle dog Speckles, now about 14.5 and recently diagnosed with probable lymphoma compounded by other health issues who is doing remarkably well considering, has taken on an extreme version of something typical of the steroids she now takes. Exceeding thirst. Let me say that again in bold, with upper case, and an exclamation point to emphasize my point. EXCEEDING THIRST!

She is so excessively thirsty when she wakes in the morning that she sits in her crate excited beyond measure, virtually dancing on her little adorable legs, waiting ecstatically for me to let her out so she can race with her adorable little old body at full speed to where I keep her water dish. Then she discovers I have lifted the dish off the ground overnight, forgetting we went through the same routine the day before – and the one before that one, and so on. Oh no! So she reluctantly goes outside with the other dogs. If it has rained, she shoves her nose to the ground and tries to lap up the water from the ramp for the wheelchair dogs before even going to the bathroom. Desperate. DESPERATE! Nothing and nobody else matters until she gets her water. She must quench her thirst – now! To quench her gargantuan thirst is her top priority. She goes to the bathroom ultimately, but does not give up her search for water. As soon as I let her back in and set down the dish, off she goes. She drinks so quickly, so thankfully, so eagerly, so desperately. I have to lift the dish up and away to give her a break to avoid bloat.

Oh, if only we would thirst each morning, day, and night for the Lord like this! If only everything else in life would be second to Him. If we would wake in the morning with nothing more important in our hearts than to drink thirstily of Him! If we would want nothing more when we go about our day than to sit at His feet, seek Him, spend time with Him, love Him, praise Him, study His Word, listen for His voice, hear Him, obey Him, live for Him, glorify Him in all we say and do as the day goes on! If we would be so thirsty for Him that the rest of the world fades into the background just like when Speckles thirsts for water.

There is no more important thirst in life than the thirst for Christ! Oh, to thirst for the Spirit of God! Drink of Him, oh drink!
