The Tidal Wave of this World
“Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.” 2 Peter 3:17
Just because everyone’s doing it doesn’t make it right. Given the times in which we live, and how much of the world has turned its back on the Lord as it rejoices in wickedness, it is easy to justify just about every manner of sin. But the Lord issues a warning in 2 Peter 3 not just to those with their backs turned against Him, but also to those who believe in Him and are committed to following Him.
Not only does He warn unbelievers that their surety that Jesus is not coming back to judge the world is dead wrong, and that eternity in hell awaits those who do not repent and turn to the Lord, and not only does He warn all of us, believers and unbelievers alike, that none of us know the hour Jesus will return, but He issues a vital warning to those already following Him.
He commands believers to be steadfast in their commitment to Him. Why? Shouldn’t that seem obvious? It should seem obvious, but what is not so obvious is how easily followers of Christ can be swept away in the great tidal wave of abominations against God. Sin is at an all-time high, wickedness abounds, evil lurks everywhere, and the tidal wave of debauchery and depravity threatens to take every man, woman, and child with it.
Beware, my friend. The tidal wave may be at the very doorstep of your home, your workplace, your vacation spot, your gym, your friend’s house, tempting you to fall away from the Lord in even the most seemingly insignificant way. But there is nothing insignificant about sin against God. Be willing to let anything go – friends included – if you find yourself being lured away from the Lord.
No pleasure found in this world’s tidal wave of evil is worth spending eternity in hell.
