So here’s my confession when it comes to JOY and rejoicing. I already know what to do. Now I need to do better. Wonder if you can relate? And if you’d like to join me in my resolve to get this right?
The Lord makes abundantly clear time and again in the Bible that JOY is NOT to be contingent on our circumstances, the world around us, what others say or do, what we think, how we feel. JOY is to be unconditional. We are to experience JOY each and every day – IN THE LORD JESUS CHRIST!
When I’m not careful, know what I do? I think I can only be JOYFUL when such and such happens, when my dream comes to pass, when I get what I want, when so and so loves me, when this person apologizes, when such and such works out, when God’s will comes to pass and I’m not in a holding pattern any longer, when the sunshine comes out after days of storm, when I feel good about everything in life, when people treat me well, when I’m having a good day, when the world news gets better, when God’s testing lets up for a bit, when the devil stops attacking me, etc.
Can and should we be joyful and thankful to the Lord when good things happen and we experience the blessedness of God’s goodness in concrete, visible, tangible terms? Absolutely! But our JOY should not be contingent on this. Our JOY should be first and foremost about JESUS!
Friend, that’s how the world lives. Believing happiness and joy are contingent on our lives and this world. But for those of us who have turned from our sins, believe Jesus Christ is Lord and in His death and resurrection, and have truly committed our lives to God and His ways, JOY IS TO BE UNCONDITIONAL. We are to have JOY each and every day because Jesus Christ is Lord, because we belong to Him, because He promises His followers forever fellowship with Him, because we get to look forward to heaven with Him, because we have access to God 24-7 through repentance and our lives being devoted to Christ, because we can have an intimate relationship with Jesus now and forever we couldn’t have without Jesus’ death and resurrection, because of God’s promises in the Bible, by abiding in Christ and looking to Him, in His love, grace, hope, comfort, peace, and mercy, and on and on it goes.
JOY is to be found IN CHRIST and THROUGH CHRIST. We are to have a well of JOY in us that is the well of God’s salvation. That even in the hardest of times, when we can’t possibly find joy in our circumstances, we can set our eyes and hearts upon Jesus and REJOICE IN HIM!
This is such a refreshing and invigorating and exciting and brilliantly wonderful truth when it comes to JOY and JESUS.
Got JOY? Find it in Jesus – now and forever. Turn from your sins, believe in Him as Lord, in His death and resurrection, truly commit your life to Him, receive God’s forgiveness and the promise of forever with Him, ask for and receive the gift of God’s Holy Spirit, live your life devoted and obedient to the Lord, and experience JOY beyond imagination – IN THE LORD! Amen!
