Walking in God’s Love

“This is a test,” the Holy Spirit spoke to my heart as I dealt with the umpteenth experience in my life of a company not doing what the company is supposed to do. “Walk in my love.”

God doesn’t just call us to “walk by faith” (2 Cor. 5:7). He also calls us to “walk in love.” He also tells us in the Bible that “faith worketh by love.” Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and love are to go hand in hand. It’s all well and good to write about this, to talk about this, to preach about this, to hear preaching about this, and to read about this in the Bible. But we aren’t just to be hearers of God’s Word (James 1:22). We are to DO what God teaches us in His Word. And He teaches us to have faith in Him AND to love as He loves.

Where do we get the kind of love we need to love as God commands us in a world in which it’s not always so easy to love? And given our human sin nature to only want to love when we feel like it, when we feel people deserve to be loved, when it’s someone we want to love, when people are good to us, etc.? How do we love consistently and genuinely and unconditionally and generously and with love manifesting in all the ways love should be expressed such as with kindness, gentleness, giving, sacrificing, etc.? By being filled with and led by and empowered by and equipped with love by THE HOLY SPIRIT OF GOD! God’s Spirit lives inside His followers, and we can always pray to God for a fresh filling of His Holy Spirit.

“And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.” Ephesians 5:2 KJV

“For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.” Galatians 5:6

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.” Galatians 5:22-23 KJV

“And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.” Romans 5:5

I have a long way to go in loving the way God calls us to love, but rest assured I am resolved to learn to do so. Thank the Lord for His mercy and forgiveness for when I fall short in loving, and thank the Lord for His patience as He perfects His ways in me. And thank the Lord for giving His followers the love to love others with. Oh, yes, thank the Lord! He is worthy to be praised, honored, and loved now and forever, AMEN!

Oh, Father, what can I say? I can say this. I can pray this. Oh, God, teach us and enable us to love, oh Lord! Perfect your love in us. And pour your love into – and through us, oh Lord! By the power and grace of your Holy Spirit, dear Lord, AMEN! Forgive us, dear God, for when we fall short of loving as you command us. But please, dear Lord, don’t let us quit when we fall. Help us to get back up, to seek and receive your forgiveness, and to press on following you and learning to love you with all our hearts and others as ourselves. AMEN!
