Your New Wardrobe

“…seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him…Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.” Colossians 3:9-15

Ever gotten a bunch of new clothes but found yourself wearing the old ones, whether by habit or simply because they were a whole lot more familiar and comfortable? God gives us a new wardrobe when we become Christ followers, and rest assured we need to break old habits and be willing to put familiarity and comfort behind us. If we’re honest with ourselves, many of us spent years getting dressed in the morning in pride, anger, hurt, bitterness, envy, selfishness, vengeance, self-pity, self-centeredness, and whatever else we jammed into the closets of our sin-ridden hearts.

Colossians 3:15 says we are “called in one body,” and that body is Christ. We as believers in Him are His body, and we need to dress in the wardrobes He gives us to honor the Lord. We need to take off our old clothes, no matter how comfy they may still feel, and put on love, peace, mercy, kindness, humility, etc. Just as we are conscious of the clothes we put on each morning, we need to consciously put on the new life we are given in Christ. Ever changed clothes in the middle of the day because you spilled something, got sweaty and dirty, tore your clothing, or realized you weren’t dressed right for the occasion? When we find ourselves back in our sinful ways, we need to cast off our sins in repentance and put on our new wardrobes – to put on the new lives the Lord has given us.

Let God’s Word be your mirror to ensure you’re dressed right!
