“Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” James 4:7 NASB

Don’t fight the devil if you’re fighting him in your own strength. Don’t resist the devil if you’re resisting him in your own flesh. When God tells us in His Word to “resist the devil”, He precedes this command with a vitally important instruction: “Submit therefore to God.”

In other words, FIRST submit to God. THEN resist the devil. THEN the devil will flee from you.

How did Jesus shut the devil down when the devil tempted Him in the desert? Jesus quoted Bible verses to the devil. Jesus knew His identity and His authority were in His Father God in heaven. He was submitted to God the Father. He was acting in His Father God’s will. And He used His Father God’s Word to resist the devil. Each time the devil came at him, He resisted with God’s Word. And He won. He shut the devil down. (Matthew 4:1-11).

Before you resist the devil, submit to God. Live according to His will. Live according to His Word. Put on God’s full armor (Ephesians 6) and use it. Speak God’s Word to the devil, and shut him down. Just like Jesus.
