Devoted to Donuts

Decades ago when I was a little girl, the big deal when it came to donuts was going to Dunkin’ Donuts and picking out the most deliciously yummy looking and tasting donuts. Or buying delectably chocolate-y Entenmann’s brand donuts my Mom bought the family at the grocery store. I don’t have a great memory, but how could I forget these? Decades later now, times have changed when it comes to donuts. Imagine my surprise when I was walking my ministry wheelchair dogs one day and discovered something wild concerning donuts and devotion. Believe it or not, herein lies a vital message when it comes to the Lord Jesus Christ!

I passed by a donuts shop that I found that day and in subsequent walks often has a line out front and people diligently filling out forms to choose their custom-made donuts. With utter devotion, they patiently endured a long wait to place their orders and another big wait it seemed to receive their purchases. No problem about the wait. They were totally dedicated. Totally devoted. Nothing it seemed would get in the way of them and their donuts. Not even what I would imagine was a hefty price for these custom-made tasty commodities. What or who could possibly get in the way of their beloved donuts? Oh, what love, yearning, and devotion they appeared to have for what would likely take about 15 minutes to consume and would likely never be thought about again.

Friend, how it must grieve the heart of God almighty that so many of us in this world have a greater hunger, yearning, craving, thirst, longing, commitment, dedication, and devotion to donuts, football games, pizza restaurants, golf courses, favorite book authors, beverages, nail polish colors, dresses, big muscles, suntans, business success, money, television programs, relationships, vacation spots, retirement plans, bank accounts, and on and on it goes than we have a desire for the Lord Jesus Christ, an intimate, personal, forever relationship with Him, and fervent passion to love and serve the Lord with all our hearts and to tell others about Him.

Oh, how we must break the heart of Christ when for some of us our priorities are so unbelievably out of order and we’re more devoted to the fleeting pleasures of this life than we are devoted to the Lord of Lords, King of Kings, God almighty! When we love earthly temporary pleasures more than we love forever almighty God!

Is the Holy Spirit bringing conviction to you right now? He is to me. I believe we can always grow in our faith, always go deeper in our trust in Him, always increase our devotion to Him, always make greater our dedication to Him, always forsake more for Him, always draw closer to Him and Him to us, and oh, my friend, may we do so!

Have some repenting to do? Surrender yourself utterly to the Lord Jesus Christ and believe in Him and follow Him zealously and fervently day by day and forevermore, oh YES!

My God, my God, little did I know walking by that donuts store the message you would give me and how convicting it would be. Some would say, Father, how can I feel convicted when I am already so devoted to you? Because there is always more, isn’t there, dear Lord, more letting go of the cares of this life and more consecrating ourselves to you, dear Father. Bring your conviction through this message, dear Father. Please reach people with it all around the world. Please, dear Lord, forgive us for all our sins most importantly not loving, adoring, and magnifying and exalting you to the degree we should. Have mercy, dear Lord, and make us into the men and women of God you created us to be. Totally, totally devoted to you, dear Lord. AMEN!

“For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power…” 2 Timothy 3:2-5

“And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.” 1 John 2:17

“”Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:19-21
