Shockingly, not to mention horribly, I learned quickly in the popular 12-step programs that I became a rock solid part of for many years to an exceeding degree that the program supposedly “rooted” in “Christianity” teaches people to pick any higher power of their choosing. The premise is that members should decide on anything greater than themselves as their “higher power” also referred to as “god”.
Unbelievably, and tragically, I, who had grown up in a Jewish family that didn’t believe in God and been exposed to talk of the Lord Jesus Christ only briefly over the years, fell for the program not to mention for the generic “god”. Now, mind you, my “god” was not a door knob. Nor was my “god” the ocean as I also heard could be considered as “god”.
But suffice it to say, I heard nothing in the 12-step literature of sin, repentance, hell, heaven, and Jesus Christ being the only true God who died on the cross to pay our sin penalty and was raised from the dead. I also heard nothing about the Bible being the one book on this earth we are to read, study, and live by. The Holy Spirit was also not referenced, though seems to the best of my recollection there may have been mention of other “spirits” including of the alcohol variety.
The Lord ultimately led me straight out of the doors of these programs never to return. When I happened upon some “Christian” versions of the 12-step programs, such as Celebrate Recovery, I knew by then that anything rooted in 12-step programs, no matter how many Bible verses were used and references to Christianity made, was simply more door knob kind of danger.
Friend, the only true God is not a door knob, not the ocean, not a tree, not nature, not Buddha, not Allah, not the Hindu gods, not Native American spirits, not New Age crystals, etc. He is the Lord Jesus Christ, the only Lord, the only Savior of the world, who died on the cross to pay our sin penalty and was raised from the dead. The only way to everlasting life. The only way to a forever relationship with God.
That door knob god along with all the rest of it was a wide open door to eternity in hell and the lake of fire in everlasting torment apart from the one true God, Jesus Christ, Lord of Lords, King of Kings, forever God!
Do I tell people not to go to 12-step programs or Celebrate Recovery? No, I don’t tell them what to do. But I tell them the truth and trust the Lord to bring the conviction that they will do what honors and glorifies the Lord Jesus Christ just as I was led by God to do. To walk away from it all. The same truth that if I had known all those years ago would have led me to the right pathway. The pathway of Christ. The right way. The way. The truth. The life. God almighty, forever and ever, AMEN!
Remember what the devil did in the Garden of Eden. And what he did when he tempted Jesus in the wilderness. He took God’s truth – God’s Word – and twisted it all around. We must be exceedingly careful because 12-step programs and knockoffs of them and all sorts of modern day “help” not to mention “spirituality” and false teachers and false teaching churches will take God’s truth – the Bible – and aspects of Christianity and deceptively and dangerously and wrongly twist it all around. Makes it much easier to be lured into it all when we hear some of God’s truth in the midst of the darkness of it all!
Be careful, friend! Don’t fall for what I did! And if you already have, turn to the Lord and let Him lead you away into His truth. Forevermore, AMEN!
