I started off feeling really excited about a big opportunity that had come my way and delightedly took the first step in the direction of taking advantage of what lay before me. If you knew my history really well, you would know I have made zillions of impulsive decisions in my life. Not only impulsive, but desperate and fear-driven not to mention pleasure-driven. Oh, yes, and self-centered. Selfish. Not-trusting-in-God decisions. I landed myself in endless messes. So much wreckage. So much sin. So much damage. So much hurt. Tears galore. Not taking God into account.
Even when I came to believe in Him. Not trusting Him. Not honoring Him. Me-based decisions. Rushing forward without waiting to be CLEAR about His will for me. Hurting God, hurting others, most importantly, and, yes, hurting myself in the process. All part of the price I paid for not waiting. And the cost I still pay when I fall back into not waiting on the Lord for His will and His timing for it.
So imagine my surprise – and by this point thankfulness – when the Lord by His Holy Spirit made clear concerning one particular matter that I needed to say NO to an opportunity in obedience to the Lord and to WAIT for God to make known HIS WILL for me. It actually felt good to be told NO and to WAIT because by this point I no longer lived for me but had come to understand believers in the Lord Jesus Christ are to LIVE FOR JESUS.
I confess to you I am NOT good at waiting. I am madly and passionately in love with the Lord and desperately desire to love, honor, please, obey, serve, worship, praise, and glorify Him. And I get pretty uncomfortable – and fearful – waiting to know how He will lead me going forward. I would LOVE to be simply told His will and go full-speed ahead. But waiting for God to lead the way is exceedingly important in learning to follow the Lord day by day. Because if we are to follow Him, which we are called to do, we need to wait for Him to lead!
Friend, please be careful not to go running ahead led by your flesh, tempted by the devil, and/or influenced by the world. Wait for the Lord and trust in His time for His glory He will lovingly, powerfully, blessedly, mercifully lead you forth!
Please note in the Old Testament, the word “wait” sometimes comes from a Hebrew word meaning “bind together”. Let us “bind together” with the Lord! Let us cling to Him and to His Word! Let us hold onto Him for dear life! Let us not simply “wait” for God’s directions. Let us pray to Him, cry out to Him, seek Him, fast if and when He so leads us as we wait on Him, spend time in His presence, praise and worship Him, and have our hearts and ears open to hear His Holy Spirit speak to our hearts as He reveals His will to us. Then, let us obey! With joy and thanksgiving in our hearts and mouths, AMEN!
