Has the Holy Spirit who dwells inside Christ’s followers ever asked you a really tough question? Whereby you felt such strong conviction you knew there was no point in trying to hide, no point in running away, and no point in pretending you hadn’t heard the question? That’s what happened to me one sunny, beautiful afternoon at the end of a long, super intense week of my ministry writing.
I was standing outside in the sunshine soaking it up thinking about how I could move my laptop outdoors and do some writing while enjoying the beautiful day. Never mind I would likely be distracted, the heat would likely tire me, and I would not likely get as much writing done. I knew it would make me happy and comfortable to make the move outside. That’s when the Holy Spirit asked His question.
“What do you want to do today?” He said. “Do you want to live for me, or do you want to live for you?”
Now if you read my writing on a regular basis, you know the Lord continuously has me write on love, obedience, dying to self, living for Christ, serving the Lord with all our hearts, forsaking all for Him, saying no to the flesh and yes to Him, etc.
I should not have been surprised by His question. Needless to say, the conviction was so strong that I believe I sucked in a big breath and refused to exhale. Then I exhaled. Sigh. I knew it was all over. My big plans for the afternoon. I went inside to work on my writing.
Why? For one reason alone. Jesus Christ is Lord forever. I am His. I belong to Him. I no longer live for me. I live for Him. And when I know clearly what the Lord is telling me to do, I need to do it. No matter the cost to my flesh.
What do you want to do today, friend? And for the rest of your life? And forever? Do you want to live for you? Or do you want to live for the Lord Jesus Christ?
If we genuinely believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, the right answer is this.
“I want to live for you, Lord!”
Help us to live for you, oh Lord! Help us to live for you! Help us to deny self and live for you! Help us to die to self and live for you! Give us the willingness, dear Father, to forsake all for you – from the little things to the big ones. Help us to live for you, yes! AMEN!
“and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again.” 2 Corinthians 5:15
“Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind, for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God.” 1 Peter 4:1-2
p.s. The Lord has graciously allowed me on some days to sit outside in the sunshine and write! How loving, kind, and merciful He is. Other wonderfully sunny days, He has made clear He wants me indoors writing. This message isn’t about sunshine and writing and being outside or inside! It’s about loving and honoring and obeying the Lord no matter His will on any given day. For He is Lord. Forever and ever, oh yes!
