Good & Faithful Servants

Periodically, I have heard people share their yearning for the Lord to look upon them when their lives on this earth are over and they stand before Him and say these words: “Well done, good and faithful servant.” They are referring to a well-known Bible story I read, studied, and heard preached for years before something dawned on me I had totally missed.

In the story, a lord gives talents (money) to his servants while he goes away on a trip only to return and discover several were “good and faithful” in investing the talents and receiving a good return while the other was “wicked and slothful” in burying his talent instead. The lord rewarded the “good and faithful” both physically with material reward and most importantly with entering into the “joy” of their lord symbolizing forever in heaven with the Lord for those who believe in Him and live in humble and faithful obedience to Him. The lord punished the “wicked and slothful” one with “outer darkness” which I believe symbolizes forever in hell and the lake of fire in eternal torment apart from the Lord for those who reject Christ as Lord and live in ungodliness, unrighteousness, and open rebellion against Him.

What did I miss in this story for so long? They were SERVANTS. Did you catch that? SERVANTS! How quickly we may long for the Lord to call us “good and faithful”, but we need to be equally quick to HUMBLE OURSELVES and to BE HIS SERVANTS. To humbly, lovingly, faithfully, reverently, honorably, devotedly SERVE THE LORD! We are to LOVE THE LORD, to OBEY THE LORD, to SERVE THE LORD, to LIVE FOR THE LORD, to GLORIFY THE LORD – who is our LORD and MASTER!

Do you have some humbling yourself to do? I most assuredly do! Continually! Let us do just that! Let us humbly and blessedly and with thanksgiving in our hearts and praise pouring forth from our mouths and with meekness LOVE & SERVE THE LORD WITH EVERY OUNCE OF OUR HEARTS, most assuredly, YES! AMEN!

Lord, this was a hard message to write. I could say this was the case simply because I was so exhausted from just finishing writing and publishing another book and from other projects with previous books and caring for my handicapped ministry dogs and ministering to people and not sleeping well. But I don’t think any of that is true, Lord. Sometimes I feel, Lord, like the devil tries to shut my mouth from speaking of you and stop my hands from writing about you. To stop the messages you give me from going forth. Father, I thank you with all my heart for calling me to be a vessel of the love and messages you give me for others. Dear God, please, please, please use this particular message to remind us to humble ourselves continually and for those of us who follow you, Lord, to be YOUR CHILDREN as well as YOUR SERVANTS! Help us to live our lives day by day in such a way that you indeed one day will look upon us and call us your “good and faithful servant[s]”. Thank you, dear Father, thank you dear master, AMEN!

“For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods. And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey. Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents. And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two. But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord’s money. After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them. And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more. His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them. His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed: And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine. His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed: Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury. Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents. For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath. And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” Matthew 25:14-30
