“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness,
“And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.” Phil. 1:9-11
“You’re upset,” the Holy Spirit told me. “Don’t be.”
Was He done? No.
“Change your attitude.”
I was about halfway through the daytime hours. My paralyzed dog Mr. Simeon had been driving me crazy. Day after day. With endless special needs. And endless talking. Not just for days. For YEARS.
Honestly, I was upset about something else, too. Ministry-related. Something that had been going on for – YEARS. Yes, YEARS.
God’s answer? Simple. Change my circumstances, right? No. Change my attitude! The Lord calls us to LOVE – and peace, joy, goodness, and so very much more. But I wasn’t filled with the fruits of God’s Spirit. I was filled with flesh. Impatience, anger, frustration, sadness, discouragement, and more!
The first verses above make clear we are to bear the fruit of the Spirit of Christ – not the fruit of the flesh!
The second verses above make clear our righteousness – and accompanying fruit – comes from and through Christ!
I needed to repent of the bad fruit, be filled afresh with God’s Spirit, and bear the fruit OF Christ FOR the glory of Christ.
Wish I could tell you I repented then and there. Instead, I hurried on through the day. Then, in writing this, I saw my delayed obedience. Oh, sure, I may have said a quick prayer when the Lord had told me to change my attitude. But I had been in such a hurry to get on with the day that I had failed to change my attitude. To truly repent. To turn back to the Lord and His ways! To bear the right fruit. His fruit. Glorifying fruit. Glorifying to God!
I went to my knees. I repented. I am filled afresh with God’s Spirit. And going forward in bearing the fruit of Christ for the glory of the Lord, AMEN!
What fruit are you bearing, friend? Need to spend some time with the Lord? Time to repent? Bear Christ’s fruit!
