“On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.” Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.” Now there were set there six waterpots of stone, according to the manner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty gallons apiece. Jesus said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. And He said to them, “Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast.” And they took it. When the master of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom. And he said to him, “Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!”” John 2:1-10
When Jesus turned water into wine, a story with which many of us are familiar whether we’ve studied the Bible for years or never even opened its pages, He didn’t merely wave a magic wand and strike the water so that it miraculously became wine. People were involved in this miracle, and included in this story is a mighty powerful message. Mary’s message. To me! And to YOU!
What did Mary, the mother of Jesus, tell the servants at the wedding?
“”Whatever He says to you, do it.””
Did you see that?
WHATEVER HE SAYS TO YOU, DO IT.
What did the SERVANTS at the wedding do? THEY LISTENED TO JESUS. THEY HEARD JESUS. THEY SUBMITTED THEMSELVES TO JESUS. THEY SERVED. THEY DID WHAT JESUS TOLD THEM TO DO. Consequently they were an instrumental part of Jesus’ miracle. And they were an instrumental part of Jesus’ provision for the people at the wedding. And they were an instrumental part of a powerful story in the Bible that lives on until this very day and will continue on as people worldwide read the Bible. They were an instrumental part of a testimony God has used to touch and teach people worldwide for centuries upon centuries.
One simple act of hearing the Lord. One simple act of submission to the Lord. One simple act of obedience to the Lord. They did what Jesus told them to do! And look what Jesus did through their obedience!
Mary’s message to the servants all those years ago is just as much for us today as it was for the servants back then.
We who love the Lord are to serve the Lord. We who believe in the Lord are to submit to the Lord. We who follow the Lord are to seek and obey the Lord. We who belong to the Lord are to do what Mary told the servants to do.
WHATEVER JESUS TELLS YOU TO DO, DO IT.
We can’t even imagine what God can do through our obedience. But the point isn’t what God can ultimately do through our obedience, though certainly we can rejoice in this. The point is this.
JESUS CHRIST IS LORD. And whatever He tells us to do, we should do. BECAUSE HE IS LORD!
Hear Mary’s message to YOU.
Whatever the Lord tells you to do, friend, DO IT!
