Mirror Mirror

1
I have had a bad – and dangerous – habit through the years of looking to the world to be my mirror. Though I am created in the image of my Father in heaven, I have sought approval, acceptance, love, feedback, opinions, etc. from those around me. Can you imagine what I see in the mirror when I hold it up to the fallibility of humans? I have accumulated a wide array of criticism, judgment, hatred, rejection, cruelty, and more.

Yes, I have also received love and acceptance. But even that has been marred, for every human falls short of God’s glory, daily. Today, I am learning to look to the Lord and to His Word to see where I stand. Unlike the mirror in my bathroom that tells me where I fall short but can’t do anything to fix my shortcomings, God’s mirror is entirely different. His love never fails, His mercy never ends, His forgiveness awaits my repentance, and He teaches me through His Word how to become more like Him. Now that’s my kind of mirror.

The most wonderful aspect of God’s mirror is that His mirror has a heart of everlasting love and hands outstretched to gather me into His embrace. Instead of condemning me, He reaches out His heart – and His tender hands – and offers me grace.

“But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. 23For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; 24for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was. 25But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does.” James 1:22-25 NASB
