Putting Out Fires

My dear pastor who has since gone to be with Jesus gave the sheep with which the Lord had entrusted him a wonderful nugget of wisdom for which I give the Lord the glory as I know my pastor would have done. The Lord has since helped me to deepen my understanding of this wisdom. He said the devil will try to get us to rush around putting out “fires”.

Why would the devil want us to hurry and scurry around putting out “fires”? Why would he want us to run in one direction to deal with some big drama? Then race off in another direction to address a big issue over there? Then speed over somewhere else to try to handle a huge relationship issue? Then back to the first direction? Then over to a new development somewhere else? Then deal with one crisis over there and another big worry somewhere else? All “fires” appearing in desperate need of being put out – by us of course! Why would the devil try to get us to run around putting out “fires”?

*When we who believe in Jesus Christ as Lord take our hearts, minds, and eyes off of the Lord Jesus Christ and our personal relationship with Him and the Bible and His will for our lives and lose focus, it is just a matter of time until we fall into sin and find ourselves off the pathway the Lord has set before us.

*When we are distracted by all the “fires” we are running around to try to put out, we will likely stop guarding our hearts and leave them wide open to the lies, deception, attacks, and temptations of the devil.

* When we are running around putting out these “fires”, we will likely exhaust ourselves, run out of energy, and be unavailable and unable to make spending time alone with the Lord and the Bible and praying and seeking and praising and worshiping Him our highest priority. And we will probably be too wiped out and unavailable as our second highest priority to love and serve Him and others in His name.

When we scamper around trying to put out “fires”, we can easily and quickly lose intimacy with Jesus and stunt our growth in our personal relationship with Him. How can we focus on loving, worshiping, praising, honoring, seeking, praying to, listening to, enjoying, experiencing, being changed by, and drawing ever nearer to the Lord when we are racing around at high speed all over the place trying to put out “fires”?

I have a huge heart for a world in need and am extremely prone to being a “firefighter” and getting distracted from the Lord and His will for me in life and ministry. I need to be enormously careful when it comes to staying focused on Jesus and the Bible and His will for me. How about you? Are you, too, prone to “firefighting”? Need to be careful? Please be careful! Oh, let us be careful!

Lord, Lord, oh how easily it is for us in this day and age to get distracted and to go running around putting out “fires”. Not just because we’re prone in the flesh to fall if we’re not careful and looking to you, but because the distractions, chaos, drama, troubles, trials, and tribulations and challenges and noise of this life are increasing ever more. Please Father, draw us to yourself, teach us your ways, help us to stay focused on you, and help us to live for you dear Father, AMEN! And Lord, please, please help us to discern when something is a “fire” the devil is trying to use to lure us away and when we need to not go run and try to put it out! Sometimes Lord as you know we just can’t see for ourselves. So please direct us, lead us, guide us moment by moment and always, AMEN!
