The finish line for Jesus’ followers is being with Him face-to-face forever in utter bliss and blessedness after our lives on this earth are over, but how do we get to the finish line when this marathon called life can be so brutally challenging, gruelingly hard, seemingly impossible, incredibly busy, and totally exhausting?
“Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:1-2
Note in these verses the Lord shows us we are surrounded by His strong-in-faith followers who have gone before us and are great inspirations and a wonderful encouragement to us. You can read about some of them in Hebrews 11. They are sometimes referred to as “heroes of the faith”. More such “witnesses” are throughout the Bible, and we may be blessed with such inspirations in our own lives!
Next, the Lord tells us to let go of weights and besetting sins! Who in their right minds would run a marathon carrying heavy weights and anything that gets in the way of the runner reaching the finish line? We need to let go of any sins and burdens the Lord shows us and calls us to release. We need to be light and free to press on in this marathon of life.
What else does God tell us in these verses? We should run with PATIENCE! Marathoners need to pace themselves. If they run too fast along the way, they will not endure to the end. We need to go the pace the Lord sets for us.
Now comes my favorite part of these verses! Who stands at the finish line waiting for us and cheering us on? THE LORD JESUS CHRIST! I read a book about a disabled triathlete who loved how tons of people cheered him on along the way and waited for him at the finish line. We can get loads of love, support, encouragement, inspiration, prayer, and help from our fellow Christ followers along the way, but nothing compares with having Jesus to set our hearts and eyes upon as we press on in the race in front of us.
Let us behold the Lord! Let us go forth with our focus upon Him and upon His Word! Remembering the ultimate finish of this marathon called life for those who repent and believe in Him as Lord and have committed our lives to Him is TO BE WITH HIM FOREVERMORE!
Oh, what a finish! To be with Jesus forever and ever, AMEN!
“The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” John 1:29
Sometimes I feel so very weary. Like I could quit in a heartbeat. Like no way will I ever make it, not even another step. I am so encouraged in considering these verses and in writing this message to keep my eyes on the prize. On the reward. On Jesus who is Lord forevermore! I hope you, too, are greatly encouraged!
Please love and follow the Lord with all your heart, and please look to Him and the Bible for the love, hope, joy, strength, power, wisdom, comfort, encouragement, and inspiration to endure to the finish line!
Can you imagine the unfathomable joy of being with Him in His face-to-face glorious everlasting presence? Oh, press on! Glory, glory, glory be to the Lord! Oh, hallelujah! Praise, praise, oh praise the Lord, AMEN!
“Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:12-14
