A long-time sister in the Lord early one morning lovingly listened to me pour out my heart about some challenges I faced. I told her up front I felt raw and fragile and feared being judged by anyone. She did something so beautiful, tender, and kind. She listened, she loved, she said, “Oh, Lara” with such deep heartfelt compassion, she promised to pray for me, and she said she wished she could give me a hug.
She didn’t try to fix me. She kept her response to me loving, simple, and short. We told each other goodbye. I got off the phone feeling amazingly loved and cared for. I knew by the love, compassion, comfort, and care she extended to me and by her very few words that her response to me that day was due to her sensitivity to, yielding to, empowerment by, and obedience to the Holy Spirit of God. She had simply surrendered herself to Jesus for Him to pour Himself and His love through to me. He knew I didn’t need a lot of words that morning. I didn’t need anything but Jesus and a sister He blessed me with that morning to love me as she did.
The very best way we can love and serve others is not by jumping in according to our flesh and what we think is best but instead by submitting ourselves to the Spirit of Christ who lives inside His followers and letting Him lead and enable us to do what He knows is best.
“Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.” 1 Thessalonians 5:11
