Those Stinky Old Sneakers

There is nothing quite like an old pair of totally worn, a hole-here-and-there, somewhat stinky old sneakers that you can’t imagine tossing out because they’re familiar, comfy, and have been part of your life and wardrobe for oh so long. Even when you go out and buy a new pair of sneakers which you know will be much better for your feet and your life going forward, you still find yourself going to the back of your closet and pulling out the stinky old ones.

Friend, when we turn from our sins and believe in Jesus Christ as Lord who died to pay our sin punishment and was raised from the dead and truly turn to God and His ways and receive His forgiveness and the promise of eternal life with Him, we become a new person in Christ and need to get rid of our old wishes, ways, and wants. We need to take off the old and put on the new. We need to put on Jesus Himself. We need to walk in the Lord’s will and ways. We need to put on the new person and think, speak, and act in a new way. We need to stop reaching for those stinky old sneakers – our old life – and walk in “the newness of life.”

I often meet people in my streets ministry work who call themselves Christians but are living the way they have always lived – for themselves according to the world’s ways. Friend, we are to live for Christ according to His ways for His glory!

Father, please dear Lord, help us to turn away from the way we lived before placing our faith in you as Lord. Help us to put on you and walk in the newness of the new life you have given us. Help us, oh Lord! This isn’t easy! It’s extraordinarily hard at times, in fact. But you’ve called us to live anew, and I believe with all my heart you have and will give us all the strength and power and love we need to obey you and no longer live for our selfish selves. Help us, dear Lord, AMEN!

“Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.” Romans 6:4

“But you have not so learned Christ, if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.” Ephesians 4:20-24

“For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” Galatians 3:27

“that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God.” 1 Peter 4:2

“who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.” 1 Peter 2:24
